The total experience of practicing basic kundalini yoga left a permanent impression in my mind. I participated in the month of January in 2017 at Spirit Yoga Foundation’s yoga center. I still remember a chilly cold morning when I begun the practical session. My body was perspiring with sweat at the end of 45 minutes practice of bhastrika pranayam. I also went through practical training of nadi shodhan pranayama for inner purification.

Meditating on chakra is basic ingredient of basic kundalini yoga course, which I understood at yoga center of SYF. Chanting of seed mantras helps in the activation of chakras (vortex of energy). Their meditation room is classical combination of traditional values & modernity---sandwiched between facing mountains. The morning songs of mountain birds capture your imagination and helps in better focus on mind for concentration.

I read & heard a lot about kundalini while working for a lifestyle magazine in London. I was eager to experience my own feminine-cum-serpentine power lying unattended in lowest chakra. I was little hesitating to start basic kundalini yoga course from India, the birthplace of yoga. In a rage of excitement, I joined SYF for learning basic kundalini yoga course. While meditating in dark room, I went through mystical out of body experience. I felt as I was floating in the air, just as balloon fly in the sky defying the Newton’s gravitational force.

Every human being is gifted with cosmic energy in hidden form. Due to worldly illusion, you never understand your divine form of energy. It remains untapped at base chakra near origin of spinal cord. Kundalini starts with purification of subtle channels of energy by yogic breathing (pranayama). When you stir the sleeping feminine power, it paves the way for inner transformation.

It is complete internal yogic action. Mastery over any one asana is must, as yoga practitioner has to sit for long hours in silent & secluded spot. You need high level of attention and concentration to meditate on chakras. Guru plays a crucial role in the stirring of kundalini. Nearly 80 percent you have to practice on your own, and rest rely on the transformation of energy from guru to disciple.

It starts with few asana series which helps in stirring kundalini and also in purification of subtle channels of energy. Then, purification of nadis and prana control is done through pranayama. The ratio of inhalation, exhalation & retention is also balanced through yogic breathing. Gesture (mudra) and locking of energy (bandhas) are other important elements of kundalini yoga. It ends with chanting of seed mantra, silence meditation & kundalini kriya.

  • Non-smoking during entire practice session
  • Vegetarian food
  • Light cotton clothes
  • Healthy body with no injury (No cold/cough)

In kundalini yoga, prana is the vehicle or the medium for carrying consciousness. It is the symbol of kundalini power in human body. The existence of all life is owed to prana. When prana flows in all subtle parts of the body, you have actual experience of kundalini stirring at base chakra.

Chakra is wheel of psychic centers in subtle body which is seven in number. It is bundle of pranic energy which controls the circulation of prana in the entire body. Kundalini lies in dormant state in the base chakra which is also known as mooladhara chakra. As kundalini ascends and reach at the top chakra (sahasrara chakra) passing through other five chakras, the real expression of kundalini yoga start.

Hatha yoga is the stepping-stone to reach higher yoga or kundalini yoga. It elevate to the new level of consciousness after transcending the worldly consciousness. The components of hatha yoga are:

  • Satkarma: Six yogic purification for entire body
  • Asana: Brings stability in your body by stirring channels of energy
  • Pranayama: Purifies the nadis and promote the flow of prana shakti
  • Bandha: Blocking & conserving energy for practicing kundalini yoga
  • Mudra: Yogic gestures for awakening of chakras & kundalini

The best time is winter months when temperature dips down. Kundalini yoga is not preferable when the temperature is above 35 degree Celsius. That’s the reason why yogis move to cool Himalayan region for the practice of kundalini yoga.

There are seven chakras in subtle body:

  1. Mooladhara chakra: At the base of spine, deep dark red with four petals
  2. Svadhistana chakra: At the base of reproductive organ with pure-red lotus with 6 petals
  3. Manipura Chakra: At navel along spine, bright yellow lotus with 10 petals
  4. Anahata Chakra: At heart along spine, deep red lotus with 15 petals
  5. Vishuddhi chakra: Behind throat pit along spine, pure blue lotus with 16 petals
  6. Ajna chakra: In the centre of brain behind eyebrows, pure white lotus with 2 petals
  7. Sahasrara: In the crown of head , all color merge with thousand petals

Ida: It represents moon & control mental power
Pingala: It represents sun & control physical energy
Sushmana: It is major nadi & lie in center of spine
